Window Treatments for Large and Wide Windows

Big, beautiful windows are a gift. Floor-to-ceiling glass and wide picture windows flood a room with light and frame the view, and here in West Michigan, they make the most of every bright day we get. But when it comes to covering them, standard off-the-shelf treatments rarely measure up. Large and wide windows call for a different approach. At The Shade Shop, we've spent decades helping Grand Rapids homeowners get it right. Here's what to consider, and which products handle wide spans beautifully.

Why Large Windows Need a Different Approach

A single shade that’s wide enough to cover an expansive window can become heavy and awkward to raise and lower by hand, which is why the operating system matters so much at this size. Light control is another factor, since a large expanse of glass lets in far more sun, heat, and glare than a standard window. Privacy can be trickier, too, especially on floor-to-ceiling windows that put your whole room on display. And then there's proportion: an oversized window needs a treatment scaled to match, or the whole room can feel off-balance.

The good news is that our window treatment solutions are custom-fabricated for windows of all sizes and shapes, including wide and tall windows.

Here are the ones we recommend most.

Skyline® Gliding Window Panels

When it comes to wide windows and sliding glass doors, Hunter Douglas Skyline® Gliding Panels are hard to beat. These sleek, modern panels glide horizontally along a slim track, so instead of raising a heavy shade, you simply slide the panels open and closed with ease. They stack tightly to one side, giving you a clean, unobstructed view when open.

These panels come in over 450 fabrics and color choices, with opacities ranging from sheer to room-darkening. For homeowners searching for solutions that can tame a wall of glass, Skyline® is hard to beat.

Designer Roller Shades

For a clean, streamlined look on large windows, Hunter Douglas Designer Roller Shades are ideal. Their simple, uncluttered profile suits big modern windows perfectly, and they come in a wide range of fabrics and opacities, from light-filtering to room-darkening.

For large windows, motorization makes these shades especially practical. With the push of a button or a voice command, you can raise and lower even an oversized roller shade effortlessly, no wrestling required. Designer Roller Shades also pair beautifully with Skyline® panels in a shared space, so you can coordinate the look across different window shapes in the same room.

Other Great Options for Wide Windows

For soft, filtered light across a wide span, Hunter Douglas Luminette® Sheer Panels combine the elegance of drapery with the function of a vertical treatment. Their rotating vanes let you fine-tune light and privacy. For energy efficiency on a wide window or door, Hunter Douglas Duette® Cellular Shades are available with a Vertiglide™ system that traverses side to side while adding insulation, which is a real plus during a Michigan winter.
